[AFRI-Discuss] Re :Re: ATLASS 3 IN CANADA-IMPENDIMENTS TO A SUCC

Dear all, I faced the same frustration few weeks back when my application has been rejected. I felt like abused, looking at the time and physical efforts I deployed moving from Cotonou in Benin to reach Accra in Ghana, crossing twice two boarders with all processes over there,  plus the money I spent for application fees.
But the fact is that we do not have more power than a government. I properly read the three reasons they gave in the email where they also clearly mention that it's up to me to reapply with the evidences if I think I can prove the contrary. I took my time to collect all the documents, then I replied and got the visa.I am not saying that it will work for all but we just need to follow the rules when it comes to something we cannot control.

I got my visa at first attempt. I provided all the documents as per the checklist provided to me from the agency in Mauritius.
I followed all the steps following email which I received from them including submission of biometric data as well.

Thank you Etienne for sharing your experience. The visa issue for us Africans is always complex, not just for Canada but for very many locations even within Africa. I actually remember during the ICANN meeting in Puerto Rico, when the location for ATLAS III was announced, I was worried about visas for African participants.

I also wanted to share the experience from 2 fellows (from Uganda and Ghana). They have been issued their visas and when I asked them, they told me that they supplied additional documents. One mentioned that the ICANN invitation letter states that ICANN will cover all costs though from reading the visa requirements he noted that he was required to provide proof of finances. So, he attached bank statements as well. As feedback, he said he would mention this to the Travel team for future reference.

They both informed me that they attached letters from their employers and one attached an additional letter from her school to show that she was a student and well as payslips. I am not saying that this could be the reason why they were granted their visas but I know that with some of our passports, we have to provide more documentation than other applicants.

I hope that people who are reapplying can get their visas in the shortest time possible.

Looking forward to meeting you all very soon.

Regards,

Sarah

Hi Etienne
More lobbying in the background is exactly what Leon, our Board member, has been doing. We have all highlighted the situation more as a serious issue - not only for At-Large, and ICANN, but for specific countries. What you did 7 years ago is still relevant. If people want things to happen for themselves, they have to be proactive and to make the effort, as you did. And it worked. Constituency Travel is encouraging people to reapply and if you have to pay additional fees, you can be reimbursed these as well as the original fees. But I realise that it is all so frustrating and time consuming. But we live in a world where people are treated differently for different reasons. And with governments, it depends on the issues of the day.

Thank you for that clarification about your application.

Maureen my case took place, 7 years ago today. But I remind you if you had time to read the Canadian immigration law and redo your file. However ICANN must do a lobbying work in the background.
Thank you

Thank you for your letter Etienne.
I would also encourage others to re-apply and to give their explanations based on the reasons given by the Canadian government - just as you did.
ICANN Org is working with Constituency Travel to facilitate support at high levels to make their own applications of support. They and we hope that it will help more people to get through. But they must reapply and respond to their reasons for the original rejection with family and employer details that will ensure their return to their home countries.

Voici mon petit apport.
Cordialement,
Etienne
Good morning all,I am confused with you for the visa refusal with regard to your journey (Pastor Peters Osawaru OMORAGBON and the others). I would like to encourage you to redo the procedure if you have time.
In 2012, I had a refusal for CANADA and I did a good rereading of the reasons he gave me for the refusal. And I read the Canadian immigration laws and I redid my file and got the visa for CANADA. And I had not yet got a visa for another country of the West at that time.
Here is my little contribution.

Etienne

Dear Peters and All,
It is a shame that volunteers, participants, fellows and ICANN attendees need to go through all this to take a role in something they are passionate about and that is a true contribution to the thriving and existence of the Internet through the MSM. I don't know how any of us can help in this regard, but I think ICANN needs to address the Canadian officials in relation to what is happening with ICANN participants' visas.
Best of luck and wishes to all

Hi everyone
Gisella, Heidi and I have made frequent attempts to help individuals, but I did not realise the extent of these visa rejections. I do know that they are not only rejecting applicants from Africa.
Peters, Liz, Abdulkarim and others, could you please send me the names of anyone you know who has received a rejection letter and the reasons that they have been given for the rejection. I have already seen some stating:
* I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay as a temporary resident, as stipulated in paragraph 179(b) of the IRPR,based on your family ties in Canada and in your country of residence.• I am not satisfied that you will leave Canada at the end of your stay as a temporary resident, as stipulated in paragraph 179(b) of the IRPR,based on the purpose of your visit.
It would be helpful to know these reasons. Please send the information to me so that we can check what more ICANN could do.

Dear all,It is a shame that this is happening and I think ICANN should find a way to solve this problem. This is the height of exclusion. Why are we even allowing  policy meetings of such global resources to take place where participants from the global south cant attend? What is the purpose of the event code in the invite letters?

Dear Colleagues and friends,
I am constrained to bring the attention of everyone to the myriad of road-blocks and frustrations currently confronting African delegates to ATLAS 3, and I am afraid, about 80% may not make it to Montreal after all. No thanks to the Canadian Embassy that, has not only refused their visas applications but also giving very spurious and insulting excuses for such wanton refusalS.For example, delegates that have a track history of previous trips abroad with valid USA, UK and even Japan visas are being told, they may not leave Canada at the end of the conference!!!That is the worst excuse I have heard all my life. If I could not remain in the USA, or Japan, UK and Europe, what is so special about Canada to keep me away from returning?
It must be recalled that we collectively put up and appeal to ICANN to be aware of the notoriety of the Canadian Embassies in African, that they will take our monies and refused to grant a genuine visa application.
It is my view that ICANN Secretariat please intervenes because its just one month away to Montreal. It will be such a shame if more than half of the accredited delegates are absent after all the preparations and efforts put into the planning and selections. And it should also be the responsibility of the AFRALO leadership to lead on this struggle. The fact that, they all have free rides to travel anywhere for ICANN events should not becloud their responsibilities to us-members from AFRALO.I hope ALAC leadership should provide the oversight function here.BestYours trulyThank you all.Pastor Peters Osawaru OMORAGBON
