This is just an application of the "Right to be Forgotten", droit de l'oubli, championed among others by Viktor Mayer-Schoenberger in his book "Delete". Legislators and Data Protection Agencies, especially in Europe, were on a froth with it a few years ago and have now boiled it down to some more or less sensible, and very limited, measures that allow people to request the deletion of some personal data. The consideration that this may allow to rewrite history and in other ways harm free speech has thrown a few more icebergs on the issue to cool it down.

And, while the technology may work - erase the message at the expiration time - it may still be made useless. Just print the message, grab a screenshot, or take a photo, and you have created a permanent record.

Your statement that fools will fall for this is - IMO - true. Hope only fools but you never know.

Question, is there any way you see this thing applies to anything under the ICANN-specific sun?

...say it ain't so?  This company ought to be charged with creating a
public mischief! [That old Soviet charge of 'malicious hooliganism' might
be appropriate!] .  Then again, some guy managed to sell quite a few pet
rocks.....never can tell, what with the mouth breathers an' all.....

If anyone thinks one can totally erase a digital artefact that is already
online,  as in 'it absolutely no longer exists anywhere', I have a bridge
to sell ya.  Prime estate this one, connects Brooklyn to Manhattan.  Oh
yeah, never mind Mr. Bloomberg carrying on...
