ICANN receives input from governments through the GAC. Its key role is to give advice
to ICANN on issues of public policy, especially where there may be an interaction
between ICANN activities or policies and national laws or international agreements.
The GAC meets three times a year at ICANN Public Meetings, where it discusses issues
with the ICANN Board of Directors and other ICANN Supporting Organizations, Advisory
Committees and other groups.

Meet ICANN'S Complaints Officer
Krista Papac, ICANN's Complaints Officer, is here in Johannesburg this week. Her
office handles complaints about things that don't fall into an existing ICANN complaints
mechanism-for example, how a request has been handled, a process that appears to
be broken, or insufficient handling of an issue. Krista would be happy to talk
about her role, how the Complaints Office is set up, answer any questions you might
have, or discuss specific complaints. If you'd like to meet Krista, just reach out
to her at complaints at icann.org [mailto:complaints at icann.org] or stop her in the
halls.

Our International Office Strategy
Göran Marby, President and CEO, ICANN
When I first joined ICANN, many of you had asked me about how we manage our offices
around the world. We've now formalized this in our international office strategy
so that we operate more consistently and effectively together, serving you, the
 global community.
We've moved from having three global hubs to having five regional offices: Los Angeles
(headquarters), Brussels, Istanbul, Montevideo, and Singapore. We have engagement
centers in Washington, D.C.; Geneva; Beijing; and Nairobi. We also have strategic
partnerships in Asunçion, Cairo, and Seoul that help us reach more stakeholders
around the world.Read more... Dialogues on the Evolving Data Privacy and Protection Regulations
Akram Atallah, President, Global Domains Division, ICANN
Theresa Swinehart, Senior VP, Multistakeholder Strategy and Strategic Initiatives,
ICANN
Data privacy and data protection regulations are currently undergoing developments
that may impact specific areas of ICANN's work. In the past few months, we've had
several discussions with the multistakeholder community about this topic. These
dialogues took place in a few different forums, including ICANN58 in Copenhagen
and at the Global Domains Division (GDD) Industry Summit held last month in Madrid.
Most of these discussions have been focused on the General Data Protection Regulation
(GDPR) [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001CmTmvtFd_WiIxZnQs5g9kWyEVPS7WgSP_3zKAl5clkoSp1IeuiJDE6Da2SJzLaKBIEZ_GA8QHlzTRiAVoQwSWaDN2SxWfsD6Q6wF16qr37oc5345vV9DQGcdrqAt22sBcgAyfU8btQH0ABHmIA5WxngAKG_a6UURyzCCizhhMVMn94S5zFf7-VyrxB1aKsuHH3ZvrAPQ-OnXkQTYabL8yEnl01HUSfjpsKF7EqDGPwA=&c=2Iuvko1GYWMvzepEL7g1xDLSr4zi46As9T1V7tTPEYd9GrGjuusTZQ==&ch=wtas0r0Z0IonYW946FkgNpIfAU4AL2Aw3VqtAcgoyZ24o6NRVB61Tw==],
which was approved by the European Union (EU) Parliament and takes effect on 25
May 2018 uniformly across all EU countries. The GDPR is intended to protect all
EU citizens and residents from privacy and data breaches. Further discussions with
the community are needed on this topic, including determining what is within the

We canvased over 600 individuals who successfully completed the program since its
inception in 2007. Our goal was to understand and document their current status:

* Were they still involved in ICANN and if so, in what capacity?
* If they were no longer participating, why not, and how can we re-engage them?

the World Wide Web passed the one billion website benchmark in 2014 and is still
hovering around that figure. The publishers of these billion websites compete for
search engine relevance and the attention of nearly 3.6 billion Internet users.
There is another part of the Web, however, where publishers and visitors want to
navigate websites and conduct business transactions in secret. This is the Dark
Web, a land of hidden services, where leaving no tracks and preserving anonymity
are valued over search engine rankings and web experience personalization.

Supporting Linguistic Diversity of Africa for the Internet's Top-Level Domain Names
Sarmad Hussain, Director, Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) Programs
Meikal Mumin, Member, Latin Generation Panel
Thirty different languages - that was the result of a quick poll asking the twenty
participants attending the IDN Workshop to list the languages they speak. ICANN
organized the workshop at the Africa Internet Summit [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001CmTmvtFd_WiIxZnQs5g9kWyEVPS7WgSP_3zKAl5clkoSp1IeuiJDE8t1vm5Qwxot3ahi_YgD2FXIlet9jfZ2FPObPoUbnwa4dOVdZKYzEsuvHkyGPwWBgZp6tJCNPq2MhPlm-LsifoaQ81_3uHHZcrm1kWJVJGA7qvTcRSzCsrSZQSqGKWpplw==&c=2Iuvko1GYWMvzepEL7g1xDLSr4zi46As9T1V7tTPEYd9GrGjuusTZQ==&ch=wtas0r0Z0IonYW946FkgNpIfAU4AL2Aw3VqtAcgoyZ24o6NRVB61Tw==]
in Nairobi on 28 May 2017. This response exemplifies the enormous linguistic diversity
in Africa, where the use of several languages - or multilingualism - is the norm.
There are at least 2,144 languages [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001CmTmvtFd_WiIxZnQs5g9kWyEVPS7WgSP_3zKAl5clkoSp1IeuiJDE45lHfgylix1ISi-XuLRqdLgXHd0Z3DE8iwyU7P1UNKAozOEOgIJJorPwELOZwbSxAPvbWmC358inO_RXX9kIAjpmvRu5ZfY5h-WrHtRXcKt2ZhP4wlcLnFB8gtSWZhzG0ebEPR7C63k9BW7P3JwEx8=&c=2Iuvko1GYWMvzepEL7g1xDLSr4zi46As9T1V7tTPEYd9GrGjuusTZQ==&ch=wtas0r0Z0IonYW946FkgNpIfAU4AL2Aw3VqtAcgoyZ24o6NRVB61Tw==]
spoken across the continent, with individual countries such as Nigeria having as

I'd like to provide some insight into the domain registration practices of large
organizations. In general, they have followed good recommendations - they provide
valid email addresses for their WHOIS contacts, configure resilient name resolution
service, and use EPP status codes to mitigate domain name hijacking.

An Interview with Dr. Nii Quaynor
Dr. Nii Quaynor is called the Father of the Internet in Africa. He's earned this
informal title through decades of working to establish and expand the Internet
on the African continent. He was the first African to serve on the ICANN Board of
Directors, and has held a number of other prestigious posts. In 2007, he received
the Internet Society's Jonathan B. Postel Service Award in recognition of his contributions.
In this interview, Dr. Quaynor speaks with ICANN's Brad White about the positive
changes he has seen over the 11 ICANN Public Meetings held in Africa. He praises
the growing diversity of the African community, which includes a broader representation
from various sectors, and much larger numbers of young people.
