Hi, everyone.

I agree with Edmon's initial thoughts and would add the following:

1. Thank the team for incorporating some of our suggestions - (agreed)
2. Highlight the finding that more policy work may need to be done beyond
this project, and call for the community to start the work - (to add value
we should try to be as clear as possible about what aspect of the work
belongs in the policy domain)
3. Highlight the finding that parts of the IDN Variant TLD decisions remain
in the poilcy realm (i.e. not just technical) - (same as above)
4. Escalate the issue of lack of review process for the proposed mechanism
- (I think we need to trigger a discussion at ALAC level on this matter
immediately because it is a governance issue and has high stakes involved
(i.e., root security and stability, transparency and accountability of
process, etc). Early feedback from the ALAC will help us refine the
statement content accordingly - I will trigger this process at the ALAC
level and request that Edmon as IDN Policy Liaison to guide the discussion)
5. Reiterate the need for policy oversight & the participation of affected
linguistic communities in the process - (agreed, but we should clarify the
preferred governance arrangements on policy oversight with strong
argumentation/examples).

I would also add item (6) below:
6. Request the Variant Program Team to clarify exactly what other ICANN
procedures are involved in relation to the LGR process and possibly an
estimated timeline. We know that there are other components of the Variant
Program. It would be good to know which and when components come into
play, in what combination, sequence, etc.

Extract from doc that explains why I would add item (6): "The mechanism is
not the last stage in making determinations about IDN labels for the root.
Rather, its output is to be consumed by other ICANN procedures that
actually determine whether a particular label is allocated to someone, and
whether it is delegated in the root."

I'm happy to work with Edmon on the draft statement and urge other IDN WG
members to share thoughts/provide input as early as possible.

Best regards,

Rinalia
