The core internet values of openness, privacy and security of personal information were compromised by the United States Oligarchy when it began secretly bulk collecting data and setting up a net of surveillance of all American citizens and those of its NATO allies, setting a bad NKVD-esque example for the entire world. Leadership is about setting a good example, not a bad example. The United States stopped setting good examples when it became an Oligarchy in 1976, via supreme court decision Buckley v Valeo which allowed politicians to be bought by corporate lobbyists. Since that embarassing year, the U.S. has been no different than the wild west, with laws only applying to poor people, and the core values of the internet have yet to be realized even for a single moment.
