Earlier in the week Fadi Chehadé was in NYC and, thanks to Veni Markovski
and Gale Brewer, we were able to have a brief meeting. It was about half
about NYC's own TLD and and half about general ICANN issues. One
interesting factoid emerged - in the .nyc landrush auctions the top bidding
was for marijuana.nyc which went for circa $60k! Gale promised that we
would soon see the promised public hearings on the TLD. Later we had an
opportunity to take Fadi to task on his NetMundial maneuvering not all of
which, as you know, has met with unanimous approval. Ever ebullient, he
insists everything is coming along just fine, but did appear to distance
the NMI from the WEF. He also mentioned that China had decided not to do
the splinternet thing.

As always, our deaf/hoh members - not to mention those who are time
challenged - would very much appreciate it if volunteers could step up to
do some transcribing, even if it's only on the short clips.

On Monday *November 24 2014* ICANN President and CEO *Fadi Chehadé* met
with NYC community at the office of Manhattan Borough President *Gale
Brewer*. Present were representatives of ISOC-NY, Connecting .nyc, New York
Tech Meetup, Meetup, NameSpace, Access, and Google. First there was a
progress reort on the .nyc TLD <http://ownit.nyc> from *Jeff Merritt* of
the Mayor's Office and *Jeff Neuman* of Neustar, followed by some Q&A -
much of it about the mechanics of the nexus requirements for registrants.
In the second part Fadi Chehadi spoke briefly about the major challenges to
ICANN and the multistakeholder model, including the IANA transition and the
development of the NetMundial initiative. Fadi had just returned from the
World Internet Conference in Wuzhen, where he had received assurances from
that country's leadership of their continuing engagement with the global
Internet and its evolving governance processes. Video is below, including a
couple of highlights. A full index is available on YouTube
