[AFRI-Discuss] AFRALO comments on the Transition of the Stewardship of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) functions

Dear Fatimata,

We can have the same model as the Public Interest Registry.

The PIR has a contract with the ICANN to operate the .ORG domain. The PIR was created and part of the Internet Society. However it has its own funding mechanism.

It should be left to the ICANN to seek proposals for RFPs from potential bidders for PTI

Best regards

Dave

Hello All,

Good point regarding the first paragraph to set up an independant PTI. My question is about finding a funding mechanism for the PTI to be operational. Any idea?

Best,
Fatimata

Dear All,

I would suggest the following if members agree to it as I have not been following the discussions earlier:

1. Either Post-Transition IANA (PTI), being an affiliate or subsidiary of ICANN; and having a contract between PTI and ICANN would put both the PTI and ICANN in an incestuous situation.

The best scenario would have been the PTI being an independent multistakeholder entity and thus discharging the contractual obligations under a contract with ICANN

2. The Customer Standing Committee (CSC) should consist of the members of the multi-stakeholder community. Though it would have been advisable that the CSC be independent from both the PTI and ICANN, however if the CSC is under the ICANN structure can suit the purpose as the contract would be given by ICANN to the PTI.

3. Since we are proposing the PTI, as an independent body, having a contract with ICANN, it makes sense that the IANA function review team (IFRT) comes within the structure of ICANN.

Best regards

Dear Fatimata,

Thank you for your comment.

This statement is an AFRALO one and not a portion of ALAC statement. It is our interest to make comments at several levels (individual, as African RALO, as ALAC).

And thank you for correcting the typo mistakes.

There will be soon another AFRALO statement, on ICANN accountability this time.
