[NA-Discuss] InfoWeek: Cybersquatting slowing gTLD rollout

WIPO is being very economical with the truth.   If you include the  
numbers from NAF, the other UDRP provider, cybersquatting has actually  
gone down.  Furthermore, since WIPO routinely sides with complainants,  
while NAF is more judicious, complainants are switching to WIPO -- and  
hence the number of cases is up.

Even if you just look at WIPO's numbers, though, the real story is not  
the one they're telling.   Compared to domain name growth,  
cybersquatting cases at WIPO have gone down every year since the  
inception of the UDRP, and at this point amount to about one case per  
200,000 names registered, or one two-hundredths of one per cent.    
They also neglect to include numbers on how many cases are thrown out  
because the UDRP panel decided there was an attempt at reverse  
hijacking -- a number that actually is growing.

Unfortunately WIPO has decided to use its position of trust as a U.N.  
agency to make rhetorical points in the debate about new gTLDs by  
cherry-picking statistics and using them out of context.
