Subject: Uso de nombres de ciudades en nuevos gTLDs
Desde:Adrian Carballo <ainfodata at gmail.com>

Dear colleagues,

Following the topic of discussions on the use of geographical names in new gTLDs, there is the interesting debate on the WT5 mailing list about the use of city names as TLDs.

An interesting topic that has been highlighted by some members of ALAC, is the possible confusion that can cause the use of the name of a city as TLD.

One of the arguments used in favor of the use of names of cities in TLDs is that, if they are trademarks, the international legislation on intellectual property indicates that these names would not be protected, similar is the case of subregions or names relevant to communities.

On the other hand, there is the vision of government and user representatives that indicate that the public interest should prevail, and also respect the national laws that protect these names of uses that are not the name of the city itself.

The debate is not closed and I think it is of great value that members of our community can follow up on this exchange of ideas, always keeping in mind the approach of the final consumer, of the Internet user, when these TLDs are delegated.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, there will be a new call from WT5 and the issue will continue to be discussed.

I suggest that we remain attentive to this important topic.

Best regards
