[LAC-Discuss] "Conflict of Interest"?

Hi Andres

In this case it isn't just one voice, as I agree with the perception of
the lack of democracy and transparency in this election - I have
indicated as such to Carlton and others privately, as well as in
discussions with my ALS but as I am not the rep to LACRALO for my ALS, I
didn't bring it up on the public list.

Every ALS has every right to nominate who they want to represent them at
LACRALO, and if Alfa Redi has indicated Erick to be the rep, then who
are we to say that they cannot have the person that they want
representing them? I can see that extended to all sorts of reasons for
other ALSes in LACRALO to interfere in internal ALS business for all
sorts of local and regional political reasons. A very slippery slope.
There are MANY ALSes that are also ccTLD managers or otherwise involved
in ccTLD business. There are also many ALSes whose representatives to
the RALOs are directly employed by internet businesses - ISPs,
registrars, etc. Should they all be banned from participating?
Just because the opinions offered differ from the mainstream, does not
indicate to me that the users interests are not being advocated by
AlfaRedi and its rep to LACRALO. If an ALS thinks that its rep is not
seeking the users interests, it is up to them to deal with it internally
and if necessary, replace the rep by their own internal processes.
LACRALO has very specific rules to validate an ALS, and there are no
rules to validate who they choose as their rep. alfaRedi has done
nothing to cause their status as an ALS to be revoked, and any
discussion on this is IMO totally out of order.

It is public his position as Executive Director of LACTLD and his current job in that institution which gathers and represents the interest of the entities who administrates ccTLD in the countries of the regions (some comercial, some governamental).

I´m aware that ALFA REDI is a Civil Society Organization, making activities in the region an somehow "representing" individual users. I can say that no doubt Alfa Redi as an organization deserves to be recognized as an ALS´s.

I know it is perfectly right to be a multi-task person and to work in civil society and to businnes at the same time. I´m also like that and many other LACRALO members are. But is different being involved in "Non Comercial Activities" that being at the same time, in the same or strongly related issues, and in the same exact region the voice of Businnes and also of users.

Perhaps users opinion in some moment would be the same that Businnes opinion. But to let the possibility to be different is the reason which justifies the existence of both spaces.

We should, no doubt, allow Alfa Redi to continue in LACRALO. But, should we allow the LACTLD´s Executive Director to be pretending to represent users interest when it is obvious that he doesn´t? Y strongly believe that we must not !
