How would you do that?

There’s no way I’d give anyone the information about how much we make (or lose) to anyone – it’s commercially sensitive.
Also the pricing models that many of us use are quite complex
For example the price of a .com domain name ranges from €0 to €15 depending on how you purchase it.
And the same is true with many of the other services we and our competitors offer.

I don’t think it’s ever going to be possible to get that level of detail I also don’t think ti’s the correct question to ask
The questions I’d be asking are things like:

  *   How much is the average industrial wage in $country / $region
  *   What percentage of the population has high speed internet connectivity
  *   How much (on average) does it cost to get a domain name + basic hosting
Etc etc

I was thinking of the aggregate and not individuals. The challenge is to get a trusted third party to compile the information while convincing all (or most) player to do so.

The financials aren’t going to be disclosed
While some of the larger players (Verisign, GoDaddy, Tucows) are publicly traded a lot of us are private companies, so we aren’t going to start sharing details about what we are making (or losing).

I found the report encompassing. The only thing that I would add is how much $$ the total business is making.

Having said that, now I can see why ICANN is reducing its budget. GTld growth is flat. I wonder if that has to do with sites like Facebook and such were people create pages very easily for all kind of purposes without acquiring a domain name.

That's the day when I am set to meet the main contractor performing the metric collection and analysis. It is a great opportunity if we think that anything should be done differently - but please bear in mind that we have been working on this for over a year and some of the "missing" metrics might be due to objections from some parties, mostly based on the impossibility to find a consensus definition of a specific metric.

Anyway, I am all ears to relay your concerns.

ICANN Publishes Updated gTLD Marketplace Health Index

LOS ANGELES – 20 June 2018 – The Internet Corporation for Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced that ICANN published an update to the gTLD Marketplace Health Index (Beta), which presents statistics and trends related to generic top-level domains (gTLDs).

The gTLD Marketplace Health Index (Beta) was first published in July 2016. ICANN plans to publish these statistics twice a year to track progress against its goal of supporting the evolution of the domain name marketplace to be robust, stable and trusted. A community Advisory Panel<https://community.icann.org/display/projgtldmarkthealth/gTLD+Marketplace+Health+Index> is working with ICANN to refine the Index in preparation for publishing version 1.0.
