Chairman's Blog: ICANN60 Meeting and Board Workshop
Cherine Chalaby, ICANN Board Chair
Before I share my thoughts on the latest Board Workshop and some aspects of ICANN60,
I want to take a moment to reflect. I am deeply honored to have been selected as
 the new Chair of the ICANN Board and do not take lightly the responsibilities concomitant
with my new role. I look forward to the future with great hope and enthusiasm, and
to working with all of you in partnership and in service of ICANN's mission.
I want to thank Steve Crocker one more time for his leadership and friendship. Steve
and I sat down together for a quick interview after ICANN60, which you can see here.
I also want to thank our departing Board members, Rinalia Abdul Rahim, Asha Hemrajani,
Markus Kummer, and Thomas Schneider for all their contributions and dedication to
the ICANN mission. We will miss them all.

ICANN receives input from governments through the GAC. Its key role is to give advice
to ICANN on issues of public policy, especially where there may be an interaction
between ICANN activities or policies and national laws or international agreements.
The GAC meets three times a year at ICANN Public Meetings, where it discusses issues
with the ICANN Board of Directors, Supporting Organizations, Advisory Committees,
and other groups.

A Look Ahead to ICANN61 in Puerto Rico
Christopher Mondini, VP, Stakeholder Engagement in North America, ICANN
ICANN60 has been a successful and productive meeting by all accounts. As many of
 you know, this was our Annual General Meeting - it is our longest meeting of the
year and focuses on outreach and engagement, in addition to the development of policy
that is the hallmark of every ICANN meeting.
As we say goodbye to Abu Dhabi, we turn our eyes to ICANN61, which will be held
in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from 10-15 March 2018. This marks the first time since
 2014 that an ICANN meeting is hosted in the North American region, and we can't
 wait to welcome everyone.

Women in Leadership: From Declaration to Action
On 1 November, women from across the ICANN community came together to brainstorm
 about ways to break down barriers and improve the gender balance in ICANN leadership
roles. The moderators of the session were Asha Hemrajani, ICANN Board Member, and
Olga Cavalli, Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) Representative from Argentina.
Some ideas that came out of the brainstorming were:

* Be great!
* Believe you are great!
* You have to jump!
* Be a mentor.
* Don't adopt a child's place.
* Think strategically.
* Know your own strengths.

* Don't apologize when you are talking.
* Have a secure attitude and you will get respect.
* Take the pen, not only the seat.
* You will get anything if you try - take it step by step.
* If you see someone not being considered, go and help.
* Be generous with your knowledge - everything comes back.

Departing Board Chair Steve Crocker Honored at ICANN60
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2017 Leadership Award Recipient
At the ICANN60 Opening Ceremony on 30 October, Steve Crocker, ICANN Board Chair,
 was named the recipient of ICANN's 2017 Leadership Award. Crocker has served on
 the Board for 14 years, the last half as Chair. His term expired at the end of
ICANN60.
"Steve Crocker's contributions to ICANN and to the development of the Internet as
a whole, are outstanding," said Göran Marby, ICANN President & CEO. "He has helped
me understand the ICANN community, the dynamics, the history, and what ICANN's mission
really means."
The award came as a surprise to Crocker. "My greatest source of pride when it comes
to this organization is, quite simply, that it works. Furthermore, it works better
and more inclusively than many ever thought possible." He went on to say, "In the
early days, it was called the 'ICANN experiment'. "We don't hear that anymore because
the experiment has proven successful."
A Tribute and Toast
On 31 October, people gathered to honor and say farewell to Steve Crocker. The informal
program included well-wishers from many parts of the Internet world, and from different
eras in his career.
Fellow Internet pioneers Vint Cerf and Leonard Kleinrock delivered video messages.
Other speakers were Göran Marby, ICANN CEO; Houlin Zhao, ITU General Secretary;
Larry Stickling, Former NTIA Assistant Secretary; Suzanne Woolf, Former ICANN Board
Member; Fadi Chehadé, Former ICANN CEO; and Nii Quaynor, "Father of the Internet
 in Africa."
ICANN's Brad White sat down on the stage for a friendly conversation with Crocker,
who reminisced about key moments in his tenure in ICANN and entertained the audience
with personal anecdotes. At the end of the event, Beth Crocker joined her husband
on the stage and made a few remarks. At the reception that followed, the audience
raised a toast to Crocker.
Board Member Integrity Screening
Cherine Chalaby, ICANN Board Vice Chair
I have no doubt that all of ICANN agrees that the ICANN community and the organization
should expect Board members to hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity,
and to uphold the reputation and credibility of the Board as a whole. To that end,
I want to share with you the steps that we have, and will be taking, in this regard.
As can be seen from Steve Crocker's blog [http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001g8UdFbZvFyD1WcnJnfMCLNp9fiAdhsGcn4nk2PiadWL0WVBgmHbJOpJjKIHoeI2Q4jktmPJsrWw5jVXsO9PGj_MX2328aCu2aTXmLyRvePTfHn0dpgpCGWRk8rqFrVW-SrEVhBhYtujX8g8r81Gamljl3A6ApK0hHT4Jd6_NsfQSrFNwlpZUxiupVlAOC1VMJQZNRTsIuQVq2ji2vEV6Hg==&c=s0-se6MjFHCjbvqpEd5yAJWdGc6JN1FSUFjzW66W1Tc42NjF6OXVog==&ch=_-cKMFymYX1mcB651JB887bHri1w4NyXJiHziP-W2I9gu6P5OGmIBQ==],
the Board has been considering the issue of Board member screening for some time.
The Board Governance Committee carefully considered this matter in detail at its
 meetings on 11 October 2017 and 27 October 2017. Based on this input, the Board
 is taking several steps.
Reputation Block Lists: Protecting Users Everywhere
Dave Piscitello, VP of Security and Information and Communications Technologies
(ICT) Coordinator, ICANN; and Greg Aaron, VP Product Management, iThreat Cyber Group
Cybercrime is a constant problem. What many Internet users don't know is that the
vast majority of users are being protected all the time by Reputation Block Lists
(RBLs). RBLs are built into the Internet services we all use every day to keep harmful
material out of your email inbox, warn you away from phishing attempts, keep viruses
off your organization's network, and more.
