[At-Large] RES: [ALAC] Summary Minutes 14 October 2008

As I announced during last week, there was a technical failure in the supply chain at Adigo, which did disrupt one call on one day, after which time they moved to a redundant backup system. This is the meltdown Cheryl's referring to.

As I said, we really aren't going to find perfection in teleconference providers, what with voip calls and mobiles in remote locations on bridges, and adding in simultaneous interpretation.

Finally, we're really under the gun here as I believe everyone knows, being down a member of staff during a really busy time. May I suggest that this discussion be tabled until a later time, at least? We are not in any position to go into detailed analyses of teleconference providers now. I would venture to say that the vast majority of the volunteer community in At-Large didn't get involved in policy development at ICANN so they could become involved in analysis of telecommunications providers, either.

We've (staff, at least) got to concentrate on supporting upcoming meetings in Cairo. I would also say that a very full plate of policy issues will be on everyone's plate within a day or two with the release of New GTLD documents of considerable size as well as a document on the At-Large review from the BGC-ALRWG.

Vanda, thanks this is good to hear. But if Cheryl
is saying "ADIGO was in total meltdown" and two
people complained about not being able access the
system from Europe, then it's far from perfect.

You're right. ICANN must organize hundreds of
hours of teleconferences each year,
teleconferences are essential to policy work and
any inefficiency a drain on resources. Learning
from what works best would seem sensible. Perhaps
time for an ICANN community wide study?
