We really need to hire a survey firm to develop a worthwhile sample. We shouldn't be attempting an end user survey with Survey Monkey where people self select. We should only use Survey Monkey with people already in our radar.

Whether there is a well-defined question that can only be answered by survey remains to be seen. That's the exercise here.

Hi,

is there a well-defined question that cannot be answered except by a survey?

Is the budget there for the design of the survey, segmentation, etc. before the first line of surveymonkey is written? What is the project? What decision will be fed by the answer to the survey?

After ATLASIII I had hoped that we might have had enough interest and capacity to establish a research group, but it never eventuated. I guess because there wasn't anyone to drive them towards a particular purpose as there is now.

So what is it that you are particularly after so that we can gather some ideas from  other like-minded individuals, about what is out there that could be useful to us, if that's what we need to do.

We took.a shot and hoped for more, but its a start. We have to find a way to make good use of it. We can't mount a worldwide survey with that much and we SHOULD not do a stupid self selection survey. That leaves two options: piggyback or pilot. Global surveys are historically rare but have become more frequent with COVID. With $50k, we might get a few questions added to something already being fielded. Alternatively,  we focus on a particular geographic region and language and see if we can get valuable enough data to get further funds. We'll definitely have to give it some thought. Another committee.  Sigh.

I am extremely heartened by the allocation of funds for survey-based research to support and drive ALAC's ongoing work. Some of you may have seen my participation in At-Large mailing lists complaining about the lack of such resources, and now here they are. I have no idea whether my contributions played any role in development of this formal request of which I was not aware, but regardless I am sincerely appreciative of the significant effort that I know has gone into creating and advancing the request.

So now is the time to deliver, now that the opportunity is at hand. I have no idea what kind of sub-group and/or what ALAC support staff will be tasked to turn this approval into a detailed plan; I am at the service of whatever mechanism will be used. I hope to be useful to this process and make a positive contribution for the first time in a long time.
