After six monthsof efforts, the At-Large Community has successfully concluded itsICANN Board Director selection process on 27 February2017. León Felipe Sánchez Ambía has beenselected by At-Large as the successor of Rinalia Abdul Rahm andwill begin his 3 year term as an ICANN Board Director at the end ofICANN60 (3 November 2017).

 

The selectionprocess began in September 2016, with the formationof two committees tasked with managing the timeline,calling for and evaluating the candidates, and organizing the finalelection.

 

Among the sixindividuals who submitted Expressions of Interest for the position,Alan Greenberg and León Felipe Sánchez Ambía were chosen asthe finalists. Before the election took place, the At-LargeCommunity enjoyed ample opportunities to ask questions to thefinalists verbally and inwriting in order to make an informed choice. At-LargeStructures also participated in the final election by directing the votes of Regional At-Large Organization Chairs.

León FelipeSánchez Ambía is an intellectual property attorney graduatedfrom the the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Healso has completed postgraduate studies on intellectual property atthe UNAM and on Internet Law at Harvard Law School.

 

Since 2006 he hasbeen partner at Fulton & Fulton, a law firm specialized inintellectual property and IT law based in Mexico City, and is headof the Intellectual Property division.

In 2008 he wasadmitted as professor on Intellectual Property at the UNAM LawSchool.

 

He is co-lead forthe Mexican chapter of Creative Commons and advisor to differentGovernment bodies that include the Digital Strategy CoordinationOffice of the Mexican Presidency, the Special Commission on DigitalAgenda and IT of the Mexican House of Representatives and theScience and Technology Commission of the MexicanSenate.

 

He drafted theInternet Users Rights Protection Act for Mexico and has been veryactive on issues like Anti-Counterfeit Trade Agreement (ACTA), StopOnline Privacy Act (SOPA), Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement(TPPA) and other local initiatives of the same kind, alwaysadvocating to defend users’ and creators’ rights in order toachieve a balance between regulation and freedom.

 

He currentlyserves as the ALAC Vice-Chair in ICANN and Co-Chair of the CCWG onAccountability where he has been deeply involved with the IANAtransition.
