The term originated with the North American RALO which has had individualmembers who are unaffiliated with any ALS. In the NARALO rules,they are referred to as "unaffiliated individuals", but oncethey join NARALO, the term "unaffiliated member" has beenused.

You are correct that "unaffiliated member" is somewhat of acontradiction in that members are implicitly "affiliated" withthe group of which they are a member. It has never been mentioned before,but perhaps it needs to be rethought as we move to having such a categoryin all RALOs.
