22 December 2020

BRUSSELS – 21 December 2020 – Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers organization (ICANN org) submitted a comment to the
European Data Protection Board, concerning its recommendations 01/2020 on
measures that supplement transfer tools to ensure compliance with the
European Union (EU) level of protection of personal data
<https://newsalerts.icann.org/JR2PC20l2E0N5k80dg00000>. This comment
follows ICANN org's comment submitted to the European Commission
<https://newsalerts.icann.org/O0k0g02E0200NCPm060d28R> (EC) on 10 December
2020 concerning the EC's updated standard contractual clauses for
transferring personal data to non-EU countries.

ICANN org's comment raises concerns related to the potential impact of the
recommendations, particularly related to transfers of personal data from
the European Union to the United States. This comment encourages the
European Data Protection Board to adopt a risk-based approach to
determining the safeguards that must be applied to make the transfer of
data GDPR-compliant.

All contributions to public comment will be available on the EDPB website.
About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global
Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an
address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That
address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN
helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world.
ICANN was formed in 1998 as a not-for-profit public-benefit corporation
with a community of participants from all over the world.
