Paul Mockapetris to Serve as Security Advisor to Generic Domains Division

4 October 2013

ICANN today announced that Paul Mockapetris, inventor of the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS), has agreed to serve as Security Advisor to the General Domains Division and its President, Akram Atallah.

"The Internet is built on the fundamental concept that its name and address system must be secure and stable," said Mockapetris. "ICANN has always prioritized that function and I'm looking forward to helping the organization continue that part of its mission."

Mockapetris created the DNS in the 1980s while at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute. He has been an active member of the Internet Engineering Task Force since its inception, serving as its chairman from 1994-1996. He was recently named chairman of ICANN's Strategy Panel on Identifier Technology Innovation.
