,

Last week, Togo’s government *joined the ranks of those who shut down the
internet to silence their people.* Citizens of Togo took to the streets to
protest 50 years under the same ruling family. In response, the government
ordered mobile internet services blocked, impacting key communications
platforms including Facebook and WhatsApp, while police attempted to
disperse protesters with tear gas and violence.

The shutdown cost the economy a minimum of $300,000 per day, in a country
with a GDP per capita of just $578. That figure does not include the impact
on mobile money services or disruptions to the informal economy, which
Togolese people depend on to survive.

*The good news is internet service has been restored in Togo*, thanks to
the hard work of local activists and support from members of the #KeepItOn
coalition — a group of 133 organizations from 56 countries working to bring
the internet back where shutdowns occur, prevent shutdowns in high-risk
environments, and raise awareness about the impact internet shutdowns have
on human rights.

*But there is still so much more to do.* In just two years, Access Now has
logged *more than 100 internet shutdowns across the world.* Millions of
people have been cut off from critical services that grow economies, hold
governments accountable, and connect friends and family during times of
unrest.

As the next phase in the #KeepItOn campaign, we are launching the Shutdown
Stories project to *amplify the voices of those who have experienced the
impact of internet shutdowns firsthand. *Bringing these stories into the
light is a crucial step in demonstrating why internet shutdowns must be
stopped.

*If you or someone you know has been a victim of an internet shutdown,
please share your story using our simple online form.*

*If you’ve been present for a shutdown, we need your help.* When
governments tell us shutdowns are not a cause for concern, your stories
will help prove them wrong. When individuals around the world first learn
about the #KeepItOn campaign, your stories will motivate them to join.

*You can share your story here,

Internet shutdowns include anything from a complete blockage of mobile and
fixed-line internet, to denial of access to a specific app, like WhatsApp,
Line, Facebook, or Twitter, and they can be for only a few hours or for
many years. In all cases, we want to hear from you.

*Even if you've never experienced an internet shutdown yourself, you can
help by spreading the word on Twitter
